B is for Blue Planet: An Earth Science Alphabet

Ruth Strother, illustrated by Bob Marsttall
Sleeping Bear Press, 2011
picture book, non-fiction

The latest in the latest award-winning Alphabet Series, B is for Blue Planet, is written in two-tiered format. Poetry introduces the concept for younger readers on the main page while an expository sidebar elaborates on the topic, giving older readers more in-depth information. Topics include coral reef, fossils, glaciers, northern lights, plate tectonics, volcanoes, and weather zones.

Not only is this an educational read, it could be used for research or writing inspiration! I think it would be fantastic to use this book’s ideas to inspire other alphabet books written by your children or students about the planet Earth, don’t you?

Book Play: The publisher, Sleeping Bear Press, created a teacher’s guide for B is for Blue Planet.
