2010 Newberry Award Chapter Book When You Reach Me

May 26, 2010

When You Reach Me
written by Rebecca Stead
Wendy Lamb Books ,2009
Chapter Book, middle fiction

When You Reach Me won the 2010 Newbery Award which, for children’s books, is the highest praise. It’s a mystery cloaked as realistic-historical fiction with a bit of science-fiction thrown in for flavor. A sixth grade girl, Miranda, in the 1970s receives four mysterious notes – The trip is a difficult one – says part of one note.

It didn’t strike me how brilliant this book was until I got to the end and I realized how all the pieces fit together. Rebecca Stead never hits us over the head with clues or foreshadowing and I missed some important clues. I recommend this book be read twice – and discussed! I’m going to read it again. I think I’ll enjoy it even more.

P.S. I love books that reference other books (which is why I love Laura Resau’s books) and in this book, it’s A Wrinkle in Time, one of my all time favorite books by Madeline L’Engle. And, here’s a clue:  the book is a clue.

Book Extensions: What are Miranda’s friendships like? How does Miranda treat people? Why is the book A Wrinkle in Time included in this story? Would you have done what Marcus did?
