Get Outside With Your Kids

Outdoor Parents, Outdoor Kids, A guide to Getting Your Kids Active in the Great Outdoors

Outdoor Parents, Outdoor Kids is an easy to read, practical book to get you and your kids involved in activities outside. Written by Steamboat Springs, Colorado author, Eugene Buchanan, who grew up in Boulder, Colorado, this book is the perfect summer resource for Colorado parents.

Buchanan covers bicycling, snowsports, camping, hiking, jogging, paddling, climbing, fishing and swimming. All with kids along. (Crazy or amazing?!)

Because I’m partial to hiking, and my kids whine and moan for most of our hikes, I’m going to apply Buchanan’s suggestion of NOT calling a hike a hike. Instead, he suggests that you say you’re “going to a waterfall, or even an anthill or mud puddle.” I’m not sure how much this will trick my kids but it’s worth a try. The whining gets old fast.

You’ll want to keep this book to refer back to when you’re skiing and need Buchanan’s ideas on how to carry your skis plus two kids skis, helmets, and not tip over. (A big reason he suggests discouraging poles until the kids are older.)

Simply put, I highly recommend this book — it’s a readable, helpful guide for getting the family outside.

I will have to sign up to get a free book. Thanks for writing the review. I just searched on Get Kids Outside and this article came up. Please check out my blog. We have a few things in common. http://www.getkidsoutsidenow.com. Getting kids involved in outdoors fun is the best thing we can do for them. I have taken kids xc-skiing, hiking, skating and biking. They are all worth it. I write about all of this on my blog.
